MySQL’s is the database software of choice for the Web, period. Oracle’s is the database software of choice for the enterprise, period. It’s unclear, as Lentz points out, that this means one is better than the other–and why we need to keep talking about competition between them:

MySQL has a different market from Oracle, and that is why they are not in direct competition. It’s not about low end and high end on a single scale; it’s quite different in many aspects.

MySQL may well not be an Oracle killer, much less an Oracle wounder. It’s more likely a complement, rather than a replacement. It’s also a case of “could have been, should have been,” and the question is somewhat immaterial, now that MySQL is firmly entrenched within Sun Microsystems. Even so, I wonder if anyone at Oracle now rues letting MySQL slip away?

Reading the excellent analysis of Arjen Lentz, founder of MySQL training company Open Query, of what the open-source database leader MySQL is (and isn’t) makes me wish that Oracle would have discovered MySQL as a complement, rather than as a competitor, several years ago.

This knife-and-screwdriver metaphor strikes me as spot-on, and it also helps explain why perfectly happy Oracle users admit to using MySQL in droves. They don’t want a screwdriver for every database problem. They like to keep a knife on hand.

MySQL doesn’t have to be suited to every possible need, and its not suiting certain needs is not a failure.

Should Oracle have acquired MySQL, rather than just a primary engine for it, InnoDB? Much depends on Oracle’s ambition to power the Web, rather than just the enterprise (as though “just” the enterprise is a small market).

A knife and a screwdriver are both useful types of tools, but they are not interchangeable, in terms of purpose. You can cut some things with a screwdriver, and you can try to turn a screw with a knife, and sometimes, such uses even make sense–but it can also get rather awkward, break the tool, cut your hand, and so on. It’s not necessarily pretty.

The team at Pingdom, a firm that focuses primarily on uptime and performance, has posted a new blog entry estimating that Facebook will overtake MySpace as the top social network in the U.S. within a month or two. That’s largely because, according to the same numbers, Facebook has doubled in size in the past year.

Even according to Pingdom’s numbers, MySpace doesn’t appear to be shrinking. The performance firm thinks that could be due to a number of factors: that MySpace is continuing to recruit new users to replace those who may have left for Facebook, that people are using both social networks, or that Facebook is recruiting members who haven’t been prior users of either site.

Several months ago, traffic firm ComScore noted that Facebook–a year ago far smaller than the News Corp.-owned MySpace–was starting to pass its rival in worldwide traffic. But in the U.S., which still has the big ad dollars, MySpace remained bigger.

There’s something to note, though: Pingdom used Google Trends to make its assessment. Google Trends traffic data is one of only many sources of statistics out there, and it’s collected primarily from people who have installed the Google toolbar. Numbers from Compete.com, for example, show that MySpace is still ahead.

Sanjit Biswas, co-founder and CEO of Meraki, said he expects customers in developing markets, where power infrastructure is not reliable or nonexistent, to be especially interested in the product. But he said that there has also been interest among customers here in the U.S. and other developed markets.

“Some people might want to set up a Wi-Fi on their roof or somewhere else they don’t have power,” he said. “And then they realize how much it will cost them to get an electrician to wire that area.”

Meraki had announced its solar-powered product last year. But the product was delayed when the company decided to change battery types after receiving feedback that the batteries ran out of power too quickly. The company now uses lithium iron-phosphate, which gives it greater capacity. Biswas says the new battery can store enough energy to power the Wi-Fi radios 24 hours a day seven days a week even during times of limited sunlight.

Earlier this year, Meraki announced it would help the city provide free Internet access to low-income housing projects as part of its plan to unwire every neighborhood in San Francisco. Meraki, which is based in the Bay Area, sees the San Francisco Wi-Fi network as an important test bed for its products and services.

For this reason, Biswas said that the Meraki Solar repeater is ideal for installations in places like city parks. Even the higher initial cost of the solar equipment will still be cheaper than running power to bay stations and radios throughout a large area like Central Park in New York, he said.

The company, which builds low-cost and easy-to-manage Wi-Fi gear, said the Meraki Solar Wi-Fi repeater will ship starting December 4. The price of the solar repeater costs between $749 and $1,499.

In addition to its solar-powered repeater, Meraki introduced a new Wi-Fi radio wall plug, which features a hole to screw the unit to an outlet. The design is part of Meraki’s push to sell its gear to apartment buildings and complexes. The company has been experimenting with product designs and ideas for better coverage in multiple dwelling units as part of the free network it offers to San Francisco.
